Bl**dy hot day. Wrong kind of heat?

July 3, 2006 on 10:47 pm | In FCC, tube |

Its another Monday, another hot day and surprise surprise The Tube is cocked up again. Cue 20MPH speed limits because lines may buckle under the heat.
Cue the usual corp bulls*it about the tube being hot. Yes we know it is now do somthing about it, oh im sorry I forgot your sitting in your Air Con office earning 100k a year.

So Sherif Ken decided to tell everyone about the new super dooper cooling units which are going on trial, apparently, at some stations. Yeah id like to see them install them on the Northern Line (sorry misery line).
Sherif Ken continued and stated that they may have to close the whole of some of the deep level lines (pic, vic, northern, jubliee) if the heat gets too high.
Of course I really do feel sorry for the staff having to work ALL THE TIME in the heat which exceeds 35C on some days. It is normally up to 5C hotter down below then at street level.

  1. And the national rail TOC’s are the perfect too, me thinks not.

  2. But at least were better at dealing with it. Dont see our trains getting stuck in tunnels every other week and then taking 1hour plus to de-train.

  3. True, you don’t have most of your system running in tunnels though. Plus, your not running trains 2 or 3 minutes apart or less, either. Or if you are then some needs to tell First Great Eastern.

Agreed, your trains are better in the heat, but not being in tunnels all day means that the heat can escape if only in to the air. Also, you dont have 640 DC volts at fround level - not to many people like to go need the pwer rails, me included.

However we both share the same sort of managers!

  4. First Great Eastern? Who are they? :-)

We do have DC live rails on the Moorgate branch but yes most of our power comes from 25Kv AC overheads.
