I have had it on good authority that GNER are now doing the usal cost cutting exercise. Not content with jacking up the car parking prices to stupid amounts or putting the cafe-bar prices up they now want to reduce the wage bill.
Well I guess they need to considering they had to borrow the money last month to pay the staff.
Rumors are that 300 staff will be losing their jobs or ‘transfered’ to other departments. The 300 staff do include the parent company SeaContainers as well so not all jobs will go at GNER.
Sea Containers has had its shares taken off the stock exchange and the £60M franchise payment is looming and no one belives GNER can afford to make the payment.
Give it a few weeks and we will see the DfT take back the ownership of GNER.
The problem the DfT are going to have, is the fact are they going to re-discuss the franchise agreement? This would set a precident for other companies who dont like the amount of money they are paying. Or are they going to take it back and then re-let it next year along with the new cross country and west midlands franchises?
