First Great Western strike suspended

January 15, 2008 on 10:26 pm | In FGW, RMT, Strike |

As predicted by this blog on sunday, the FGW strike has been suspended pending further talks with FGW managment.

FGW has agreed not to use managers to drive or work trains as guards.

  1. Can “this blog” now predict what will happen on Sundays when not enough guards turn up to staff all the trains? Am I going to be sitting at Paddington for hours waiting for a train home? If so, I’ll expect to be compensated for my time.

I’m often critical of the private rail companies, but in this case it would seem to be the unions who are helping to degrade the quality of service even further.

  2. It will prob become like Arriva Trains Northern was, buses every weekend. Of course if its strike they dont have any obligation to refund you or get you to where you want to go.

  3. We’re not talking about a strike. I agree, only a fool would have tried to travel on the days of the strike.

However, if they are short-staffed on a normal Sunday, that’s nothing to do with a strike.

I think these staff need the sort of ultimatum Richard Branson gave his airline cabin crews recently.

  4. What Branson did was low, very low. There is even talk of the union taking branson to court for breaking the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act.
A unionised workplace is actually more constructive in the long term, if FGW did give an ultimatum that branson gave VA, most of the staff go on strike and then prob transfer to other First companies.
Youd then seriously be screwed as all the staff would have left.
