SWT drivers to strike.

March 18, 2008 on 11:43 pm | In South West Trains |

THIS STRIKE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED PENDING FURTHER TALKS

ASLEF members which work on SWT have voted yes to industrial action in the ballot regarding the 2007 pay review. SWT have offered an insulting offer of 4.5% which is below RPI (currently running at around 5%).

Members will be withdrawing their labour between 00.01 on Monday 31st March 2008 and 23.59 on Thursday 3rd April 2008.

At the present time SWT have stated that a reduced service will operate and that some services will be replaced by buses.

  1. The SWT strike we cause major disruption to my week - thank you!

In my opinion, the drivers should find another job if they are not happy with their pay.

£40,000+ pa to drive a train is fantastic! They should stop being so greedy.

The level of service the public receives is poor - why should drivers be rewarded with more money??!!

  2. I think ASLEF may have a point in saying that the government’s “inflation” figure (which excludes mortgages, council tax, and other things that people have to pay) is not a valid measure to be used in pay calculations, and that the more realistic measure is the RPI, which hit 4.8% in March.
However, the average over the past year has been lower, and 4.5% seems a reasonable figure to me.

  3. I recommend that all passengers should ’strike’ as well. When you are next asked to present your season ticket then ask the inspector if they voted for the strike. Refuse to show them your valid ticket until they find you a colleague who did not vote for the strike. This works best at Waterloo on the underpass where they have a row of inspectors. As long as you have a valid ticket then you are breaking no law. Only give respect where respect is due. Commuters stand up.

  4. tim and others I would suggest you don’t attempt this.
We ticket inspectors have various laws, regulations and bye-laws on our side.

The main one is “Failure to show, an authorised person, a valid ticket or authorisation to travel on demand”. This means that regardless if you have a valid ticket or not you can still be fined for refusing to show it when asked.

Another one we can do is to refuse you travel. We have various reasons we can use.

  5. It’s comments like that from ‘Bradley’ that show just how little you actually know about what we are actually striking for.

We are professional people, in a job that demands 100% concentration levels, if this was purely about money then we would of course of accepted, but the fact is the 4.5% ‘rise’ is not JUST about money, that amount would be reduced by 1% if we accepted a deal with pay + conditions - those conditions being totally useless to us for 1% of the pay deal.

SWT operate a 10 hour working shift for their drivers and regular 8 days on shift patterns, would you be happy to know your driver, who has your life in their hands, was struggling to even keep his eyes open towards the end of a long shift like that?
When you have to concentrate at the levels required to run a 12 coach train with anything up to 1000 people on board then i would listen to your views, until that time, please think about how stupid you actually sound.
